Three Hunting Owls with Magpies (2002)
|
This original knotwork design painting is based on the hunting
patterns of owls. The knotwork around the central figures represent the
air currents produced by the flapping of the owl's wings. The knotwork
in the purple field represent the spiral hunting patterns of the owls.
The magpies are North American birds and the snakes in the blue keywork
designs are the North American coral snakes. The three wings surrounding
the central design are based on Tlinkit design patterns. They are considered
to be a tribute to the Northwest Coast Indians. Elantu chose three owls
for this piece to represent a family that we met in Vermont. A mated pair
lived in the woods behind our house and one spring they were raising a
daughter who apparently had eyesight problems. The parents were teaching
her to hunt and with each strike, she would overshoot the target and hit
the bare ground with her claws. This would make her so angry that she
would pull up grass and make a fuss, clacking her beak and shrieking.
Towards the end of summer, she figured out what is what she was doing
wrong and began making successful hits on the local mice. The three owls,
parents and daughter, in a circle represent the continuity of the family.
